Our History

  • The South African Business community in Tanzania has formed itself into an entirely voluntary organization called the SA Business Forum ( www.sabf.or.tz )  and has regular meetings during the year. It joins with the SA High Commission and the South African Women's Group (SAWG) to raise funds for charity under the (South Africa-Tanzania) SATZ banner. US$40 000 was raised in 2007/8 for charity, and was distributed to deserving charities at the end of April 2009. Prominent members of the forum are Vodacom, Tanzanian Breweries Ltd (SAB), Tanzanian Distilleries Limited (Distell), South African Airways, Southern Sun, Shoprite, Stanbic, National Bank of Commerce, DSTV, Kilombero Sugar (Illovo) etc. There are many smaller companies with SA links in a variety of spheres – retail, construction, medical, training, security services etc. The Forum is not exclusively SA businesses, but also those TZ businesses with SA connections. A number of TZ companies also employ significant numbers of South Africans.
  • The Business Forum's broad objective is to further the common business interests of South African and Tanzania and between our two countries. The Chairman of the Business Forum is Adam Fuller, General Manger of the Southern Sun Hotel. The Forum meets approximately 10 times a year, usually at the Southern Sun, with the host rotating, again on a voluntary basis. The format is a short business meeting, an address/presentation by the guest speaker and a cocktail. Minister Manuel recently addressed the SABF and drew a large and lively crowd, with some of the more senior representatives of various companies also present. One of the Forums key activities is the fund raising component for SATZ. It is a useful channel by which member companies can effectively utilize their Social Responsibility Programs

Since the establishment of the High Commission, the Mission has had a constant stream of requests to assist various organizations and charities. Unfortunately, the South African Government does not allocate development funding or funds for “goodwill” actions, and the Mission relied on the assistance of South African business in Tanzania to help worthy causes. The wives of South African businessmen were also eager to be of use, and they began in 1998 a concerted week's activities, with the aim of raising funds to be allocated to various charities. This annual SA Week, continued until 2005, when it was found necessary to out-source the events planning, as it had become too large for one person or group of volunteers to manage.

As a result, the 3 interested groupings, the SABF, the SAWG and the High Commission, as the SATZ Committee, annually tender for an events planner to manage the fund raising activities of the three groups. In the case of the High Commission, no funding is requested from the SA Business Community, except in SATZ connection, and the SABF members donate generously to SATZ projects, as part of the South African Community in Tanzania, and in addition to their normal social-responsibility programme. The SAWG donates of their time, energy and creativity. The current events planner is Afrikings, who approaches the sponsoring companies on behalf of the SATZ. Traditionally the High Commissioner or a member of his personnel is closely involved in the SATZ Committee. Currently the chairperson is Carol Rath, Counsellor at the High Commission.

The objective of SATZ is “to build long term positive relations between South Africans and Tanzanians, by holding events, and in doing so raise funds for nominated Charities”.
